What Is Chaldean Numerology — And How Is It Different?

Most people who encounter numerology for the first time are introduced to the Pythagorean system, which assigns numbers to letters in simple alphabetical order. Chaldean numerology, by contrast, is believed to be older still, with roots in ancient Babylon, and assigns values to letters based on their sound and vibration rather than their position in the alphabet.

This distinction matters more than it might first appear. Because the two systems assign different values to the same letters, a name or word can produce a meaningfully different number depending on which method is used — which is why it's important to be consistent and to work with a practitioner who understands the reasoning behind the system, not just the arithmetic.

In Chaldean numerology, the numbers 1 through 8 are used for letter values (the number 9 is considered sacred and is not directly assigned to any letter, though it plays an important role in calculations).
